It’s a perfectly reasonable question. AI is developing at a remarkable pace, and yes – you can get something that resembles a website out of it remarkably quickly. So why pay a professional?
I’ve seen plenty of these projects after the fact. On the surface, the site might look reasonable enough. But look below the surface and problems start to appear: messy, hard-to-maintain code, insufficient security settings, slow load times, poorly structured SEO, or WordPress plugins that don’t work together. These don’t necessarily show up straight away – they appear months or years later, when the site crashes, search rankings collapse or data leaks.
AI is an excellent tool when the person using it knows what they’re doing. Even an experienced developer who gives AI poor instructions will get a poor result. But when the instructions are precise and the developer can evaluate and correct the generated code, the work speeds up considerably. I use AI as part of my own workflow – for bouncing ideas, editing text and handling repetitive tasks. It’s not my adversary; it’s a tool, like any other.
Building a website takes strategy, structural thinking and technical know-how. AI can churn out code quickly, but if the understanding of architecture or security isn’t there, the whole thing becomes unmanageable. It’s a bit like the fact that almost everyone has a camera on their phone, but not everyone takes photos that people actually stop to admire. Or anyone can pick up a brush, but not everyone paints the Mona Lisa.
There’s also the question of time management. Building a website with AI assistance, without a technical background, means a lot of searching, trying, getting it wrong, and most likely eventually calling in a professional to sort things out. All of that time comes directly out of developing your actual business. What is your time worth?
